B.T. prototype table lamp by Studio A.R.D.I.T.I., 1974
€4.750
This extraordinary and rare table lamp is part of the B.T. series, designed by Studio A.R.D.I.T.I. and Gianni Gamberini in 1973. It features a chrome pyramid-shaped metal base, onto which four light sources can be attached magnetically. The lamp operates with custom light bulbs that draw power directly from the metal surface they connect to. Beneath the base, a transformer converts standard 220/230V input into 12V, allowing the metal surface to carry a low-voltage current. While the current is imperceptible to the touch, it is sufficient to illuminate the bulbs. This innovative concept mirrors the functionality of model trains, where electricity flows through the tracks, powering the train only when contact is made. The B.T. series was one of the earliest low-voltage lighting experiments conducted by Duccio Trassinelli. His experiments were highly influential and played a significant role in shaping modern Italian design as we know it today.
The B.T. series was initially manufactured by Sormani, a distinguished lighting company based in Arosio, Northern Italy. In the 1970s, Sormani produced approximately five to six different models within this series. However, this particular table lamp stands apart as a prototype crafted by Duccio Trassinelli himself. Only four of these prototypes were ever made, making it an exceptionally rare find. Moreover, this specific lamp originates from Trassinelli’s personal private collection, further elevating its importance. The lamp is fully functional and is made of high quality. It remains in very good condition with some scratches on the metal surface.
Studio A.R.D.I.T.I., founded by Duccio Trassinelli, included notable designers such as Alessandro Mazzoni, Delle Stelle, and Elisabetta Merlini, with Gianni Gamberini joining for a brief period. In the early 1970s, the collective pioneered a new philosophy of lighting design, leading to the creation of highly influential pieces. Among their most notable works are the Prismar Lamp, Ponte Lamp, and the B.T. lighting series.
In addition to this rare table lamp, we also offer two B.T. wall panelsand a Prismar table lamp by the same designer.
With the sale of this lamp, you will receive spare light bulbs, a copy of the original patent, a signed certificate of authenticity by Duccio Trassinelli, and a brochure with additional information about the lamp and the Studio A.R.D.I.T.I. design collective. This exceptional piece is a must-have for collectors and enthusiasts of avant-garde industrial design.
Provenance: Private collection of Duccio Trassinelli (founder of studio A.R.D.I.T.I.)
